‘Henri Matisse – Forms in Freedom’
Henri Matisse is widely regarded as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. Renowned for his intense use of color, Matisse was a key proponent of Fauvism before turning to paper collage later in life in a bold yet simple project called Cut-Outs.
The ‘Forms in Freedom’ exhibition brings together around 150 of Matisse’s works from the collection of the Musée Matisse in Nice, France, including a range of paintings, sculptures, and textiles. The exhibit has a particular focus on Cut-Outs and is headlined by Flowers and Fruits, a giant Cut-Out that is on display in Japan for the first time.
In addition to displaying a wide variety of Matisse’s works, the exhibition also introduces the Chapelle du Rosaire de Vence, one of his final and grandest projects. Visitors can learn more about the different aspects of the chapel, from its architecture and interior to its ceremonial dress.
Period: February 14 – May 27, 2024 ※The exhibition is closed on Tuesdays except for April 30.
Location: The National Art Center, Tokyo, Special Exhibition Gallery 2E
